How to store spices so they stay fragrant
3 min read · By the Ellara Ceylon team

Spices lose aroma slowly, but you can slow the process even more.
- Use an airtight tin. Tins block light and keep out moisture.
- Keep spices away from heat. The shelf above the stove is the worst place.
- Buy small amounts and replace them often.
- Use a dry spoon, never one that has been in a steaming pot.
- Write the date you opened a tin on the lid.
How long do they last?
Ground spices are at their best for about a year. Whole spices, such as peppercorns, cloves and cinnamon quills, can stay vibrant for two years or more. If a spice smells faint when you rub it between your fingers, it is time to replace it.
